Presented by Laura Savino

Captain Laura Savino piloted the B777, B767, B757, B747, B737, A319 and A320 as an international airline pilot for United Airlines. Laura flew for Eastern and Pan Am regionals before that. On her way to becoming a commercial airline pilot, she worked as a flight instructor, charter pilot, freight pilot, aerial sightseeing tour pilot and aircraft repossessor.

In 1977, two fully loaded B747s collided in Tenerife in the world's deadliest air disaster, with 583 fatalities. Years later as a pilot with United Airlines, Laura Savino piloted the B747 with the surviving Pan Am pilot from this crash, Captain Robert Bragg. Privileged to hear intimate details regarding what the pilots were actually thinking, Savino shares Captain Bragg's insights and discusses the inception of CRM (cockpit resource management), spurred by this crash.

Pilot, Award Winning Author and Teacher, Laura Savino takes you directly into the cockpit for an exclusive look into the boys' club of airline pilots in her book JET BOSS: A Female Pilot on Taking Risks and Flying High, published by Freedom Forge Press.

Topic: Learn tips on the most important weather guidance to examine the night before a long cross country flight.

Description:
Twas the night before your long cross country flight and you are curious to find out if the weather tomorrow morning is going to cooperate or if you are likely to postpone the flight. What weather guidance is important to examine more than twelve hours before your flight? Since you don't have the benefit of surface observations, radar depictions, SIGMETs, G-AIRMETs, Center Weather Advisories or pilot weather reports, you have to rely on the big weather picture to get a sense of the adverse weather you might face along your proposed route of flight. This webinar will discuss what weather guidance will provide the best view of the big weather picture. This includes understanding and applying uncertainty in the forecast and identifying key adverse weather signatures to avoid. You will also learn how to utilize prog charts and other precipitation forecasts like a pro.

Wings of Gold: The Story of the First Women Naval Aviators (12/8/2021)

Wings of Gold: The Story of the First Women Naval Aviators (12/8/2021)
Click to Watch

On Feb. 2, 2019, the skies over Maynardville, Tennessee, filled with the roar of four F/A-18F Super Hornets streaking overhead in close formation. In each aircraft were two young female flyers, executing the first all-woman Missing Man Formation flyover in Navy history in memory of Captain Rosemary Mariner, a groundbreaking naval aviator who broke down barriers for women pilots wanting to serve their country. Recruited for an experimental program in 1972, Mariner and her five fellow graduates from the inaugural group of female Navy pilots racked up an impressive roster of achievements, and firsts: first woman to fly a tactical jet; first to command an aviation squadron; first female Hurricane Hunter; first pregnant naval aviator; plaintiff in a federal lawsuit challenging a longstanding ban on women in combat; and, tragically, the first to die in the performance of her duties. Leading by example, and by confrontation when necessary, they blazed a trail for women toward the highest levels of command, challenged deep skepticism within the fleet and helped win the repeal of rules preventing women from serving equally with men.

Stabilized Approaches and Landings (6/9/2021)

Stabilized Approaches and Landings (6/9/2021)
Click to Watch

This webinar is a FAASTeam offering that is part of a joint FAA/industry public education campaign emphasizing the need for training and currency of stabilized approaches, which are key to safe approaches and landings. The stabilized approach concept is characterized by maintaining a stable approach speed, descent rate, vertical flightpath, and configuration to the landing touchdown point.

Pilots of all certificate levels are prone to destabilized approach and landing accidents. Most GA approach and landing accidents occur during the day, and half occur in VMC. Pilots must accurately assess the risk associated with each flight and plan accordingly. They must continuously reassess risk en route and commit to alternate plans before they are in a state of emergency. This presentation acquaints the audience with the hazards of flying unstabilized approaches and landings and offers suggestions for avoiding accidents.

Speakers: Minnetta Gardinier (Iowa FAASTeam Representative.); Deb Henneberry, Ed.D. (Asst. Prof. of Aeronautics, Vaughn College; CFI/CFII/MEI)

Carole Hopson flies the Boeing 737 for United Airlines as a First Officer, based in Newark, NJ. After a remarkable 20-year career as a journalist and executive, she followed her dream to become a pilot and share her passion with others as a flight instructor, while raising her family. Despite what appeared like success, Carole always yearned to follow a childhood passion. Walking away from executive-level positions, she went to flight school with gusto and completed flight training at the peak of her corporate accomplishments.

True to her roots as a writer, Carole is now preparing to publish her first novel in June 2021: A Pair of Wings: A Novel Based on the Life of Pioneer Aviatrix Bessie Coleman, the first American to earn the French civilian pilot's license.

99s International Member Council presents the fourth webinar of the 2021 Webinar series: Turbulence to Triumph: Navigating Experiences to Empowerment: "You Be You"!

Presenter: Captain Kelly Lepley

Image of Lepley Kelly 150 253 20210326072420Kelly is Captain on the B-747 flying for the world's largest package delivery company. Her career spans over thirty years, flying planes as small as a single engine Cessna to one of the largest cargo aircraft transiting the skies. At the expense of her private life, she excelled in her professional career. That success would not compensate for the pain she had masqueraded. No one knew the extent of it. She hid it for nearly 40 years.

This all came crashing down in July 2009, when she sought help for the internal battle she was fighting. She would go on to lose her home, marriage, retirement and be ostracized from members of her church. The world she once knew, was no longer there. Coming to terms with this new reality deepened her faith, softened her heart and motivated her to speak out on living an authentic life.

Her love for others, especially those marginalized in society, comes from her journey. She has walked in their shoes, and experienced their pain. Knowing the struggle, and facing societal obstacles, she has made it a life commitment to inspire others through her motivational talks on the importance of living an authentic life.

Her story has touched the lives of many through her talk at TED. Since then, she has gone on to speak before audiences throughout North America to include; Delta Air Lines, University of Alaska, University of Louisville, Dayspring United Methodist Church-Tempe Arizona, Out and Equal Atlanta Workplace Leadership Forum, the Tom Joyner Radio Show in Toronto, Canada and most recently the Bank of Montreal Podcast.

How to Be A Chick in the Cockpit

Presenter: Erika Armstrong, Captain International Commerical Airliner, Author of "A Chick in the Cockpit" - In the high stakes, ego-driven world of aviation, this is an extraordinary best-selling true story of how a level-headed, self-deprecating woman with an aviation addiction finds herself in jail, her baby ripped from her arms, her piloting career taken away, and every feasible exit leading to a very dark place.

Erika has spent 30 years in aviation. From the front desk of a small FBO in Minnesota to the captain's seat of an international commercial airliner, Erika Armstrong has experienced everything aviation has to offer. During her piloting career, she was a Red Cross, charter, corporate, cargo, hazmat and air ambulance pilot flying 28 different aircraft before going to the airlines. She is also an aviation professor at MSU Denver, VP of Business Development at Advanced Aircrew Academy, Mid to Large Cabin Business Jet Sales Specialist and author of A Chick in the Cockpit.

Her experience is backed up by her education. She has three years undergraduate journalism education from the University of Minnesota, a B.A. degree from the University of Denver in International Business and Economics and a M.S. in progress from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She is also the 2020 Tony Kern's Professional in Aviation winner.

Most uniquely, 500,000 aviation enthusiasts and followers around the world have considered Erika their aviation thought leader. She has been able to use her social media full stack platform to educate and share the joys of aviation to inspire the next generation of pilots.

You cannot be scored by the reviewers on what you missed presenting in your application. But you may be scored poorly on what doesn't present well enough in your application. So be sure to put forth your BEST application! Many applicants fail to include important details in their essay, while writing about peripheral things that won't raise their score. Panelists will discuss what judges are looking for in your story and your supporting documents. They will offer tips to polish your application so that it may rise above the competition.

Our panelists are AEMSF Trustee Dottie Norkus and Southwest Section AE Co-Chair Ceci Stratford

Stefanie Sun is an airline pilot and Brittany Stein is a flight attendant. From these two different perspectives, they talk about how to "Detox" the workplace, dealing with stress, communication, self-doubt, personal issues, challenges, attitudes, and much more. They will give you principles you can use in your everyday life. Their presentation was well received at the WAI Conference this past March. No matter what your situation, you will find something from this presentation you can take and apply immediately to your own life.

While most of us might think about a juice cleanse or green tea when we hear the word "detox," the concept of detoxing can impact several areas of our lives. In fact, removing harmful elements and increasing beneficial ones are what detoxing is all about.

No matter your current health or aviation career path, we believe that all of us could benefit from a communication detox. With nearly twenty years of combined aviation experience, we look forward to sharing practical ways to identify toxic thoughts and improve crew synergy through increased emotional intelligence ? from both pilot and flight attendant perspectives.
