Zoot Suits and Parachutes

ZOOT SUITS & PARACHUTES by O. Vivian Fagan

This book gives the personal experiences of a group of young WASP trainees initially centered around the seven months of training in Sweetwater, Texas and then while ferrying military aircraft throughout the United States.

Opal Vivian (Hicks) Fagan was a flight instructor when World War II began. She was teaching army and navy pilots to fly when the WASP program started and she joined it. The WASP ferried planes from the factories to the airbases, flight tested planes for airworthiness, towed targets for practice and performed a multitude of essential duties for the military. They flew all types of planes from Piper Cubs to B-29s.

She was a member of the Aloha Chapter of The 99s for many years. She died in year 2000 at 85. The Aloha Chapter administers the Vivian Fagan Memorial Scholarship Fund. Vivian had donated seed money for the scholarship then gave the books so sales could help fund the scholarship. This is a local (Hawaii) scholarship award given each June.
