OCEAN FLYING - A PILOT'S GUIDE By Louise Sacchi (1914 - 1997) Louise Sacchi, a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania 99s Chapter until her death in 1997, made her first overseas flight in 1962 when Marion Hart asked her to be co-pilot on a flight to Europe in Hart's single-engine Bonanza. Sacchi then freelanced transatlantic ferrying of small aircraft for the next 3 years. In 1965, she formed Sacchi Air Ferry Enterprises (S.A.F.E.), and from then until 1980, she made 340 ocean crossings, Atlantic and Pacific, in single and multiengine planes. Louise actively encouraged flying across the oceans in private planes, and wrote this book to help make the trip enjoyable and uneventful. Various chapters discuss a pilot's experience level, mental attitude, staying healthy overseas, the care and feeding of the plane and the engines, emergency equipment, navigation, charts, route characteristics, and foreign governments. It is a fine book, written in clear, concise, and interesting manner. It is well worth the time to search for a copy, especially if you intend to do transcontinental and international air racing or fly your plane, single or multi-engine, to other continents for the fun of it.
