MAMA BIRD - BIOGRAPHY OF EVELYN BRYAN JOHNSON, A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR by George Prince George Prince was a flight student of Evelyn Bryan Johnson. He states in his acknowledgement that without her contribution of notes, records, conferences, and information, this part of her story could not be told. In the Introduction, he says about Evelyn: "A few women have flown farther, faster, and higher, but no woman living has trained more pilots, flown and logged more hours in as many types and categories of airplanes, given more FAA exams, and received more awards than Evelyn Bryan Johnson." Born in 1909 in Kentucky, she attended and graduated from the University of Tennessee, marrying W.J. Bryan while a student there in 1932. She started flying in 1944, received her commercial and instructor ratings, joined The Ninety-Nines in 1947, and flew in the 1951 Powder Puff Derby. In 1955 she flew a Tori-Pacer to South America. By 1958 she had a helicopter flight instructor rating. There are many more high points and awards during the years, as the reader will enjoy discovering. Evelyn Bryan Johnson is now 91 years old, flies everyday, still instructs students, and says she will continue to fly until ..."I can no longer pass the physical examination." To the date when the book was printed (1999) she had logged 56,600 hours of flying. This is far more than anyone else has logged, and the probability is that no one else will ever come close to this mark.
