HISTORY & HEROES OF NEW HAMPSHIRE AVIATION by Jean Batchelder. Jean Batchelder has been active in The 99s for many years and has served as Northern New England Chapter Chairman and New England Section Governor. She has served on 99s International committees and on New England Air Race committees, as well as holding other important aviation posts. She has flown in several transcontinental and international speed races. Her small state of New Hampshire has an interesting history in aviation and its pilots have contributed much to the progress of aviation at home and around the world. The book begins with an overall view of New Hampshire itself, including its weather and terrain. Jean then writes: "Men and women from New Hampshire have set records, blazed trails, and contributed much to the field of aviation. They were the first to fly the Atlantic, first into space, and left their footprints on the moon...." She gives biographies of 61 aviators. Many are well-known, such as Alan Shepard, Jr., and Christa McAuliffe.
