EIGHTY-FIVE AND STILL ALIVE by Virginia Breed

This is the story of the author's long life in the 20th century, of her warm family relationships, overcoming the tragedy of the death of her son, Karl, at 14, and the therapeutic and exciting results of learning to fly. Some highlights: married life during the Great Depression, helping her husband to start a new business only to eventually fail, though not before its prosperous period encouraged the two to buy a brand new Piper Tri-Pacer and learn to fly it.

After being widowed at the age of 51, with one daughter now married and the other off to college, Virginia bought another airplane, a Piper Cherokee, which she flew for the next 17 years. Flying offered adventure, self-confidence (most of the time, at least; it can be humbling, too!) and making an exciting new life for herself. She flew the Cherokee in the 1971 AWTAR, dubbed the Powder Puff Derby by the media, and on many trips to Albuquerque, California, Wisconsin and other Midwestern states. Joining The Ninety-Nines, Virginia especially enjoyed talking about flying, after being the lone female pilot in her Norwich, New York hometown for years.

The book also describes Virginia's extensive travels (by airlines) from Iceland to Antarctica, Scandinavia to Egypt and Kenya, Scotland to Australia and New Zealand, Hongkong, China and Japan.
